IASTM / FAKTR
What is IASTM?
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM) is an evidence-based, soft tissue treatment procedure. IASTM is performed with ergonomically designed instruments that have been suggested to detect and treat fascial restrictions, encourage rapid localization and treatment to areas exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, or degeneration.
What is FAKTR?
Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehabilitation (FAKTR) was formalized in 2010. FAKTR is a unique approach that involves not only IASTM, but utilizes many manual and instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques and incorporates functional rehabilitation through provocation and movement.
How does it work?
It has been suggested that instruments effectively work on fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The ergonomic design of these instruments enhances the ability to locate restrictions and treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure.
The introduction of controlled microtrauma to affected soft tissue(s) causes the stimulation of a local inflammatory response and facilitates a cascade of healing activities resulting in remodeling of the affected soft tissue(s). Adhesions within soft tissue - which may have developed as a result of surgery, immobilization, repeated strain or other mechanisms - are mobilized allowing functional restoration to occur.
IASTM / FAKTR at Optimize Sports Chiropractic
At Optimize Sports Chiropractic, we utilise and integrate IASTM / FAKTR as part of the individualized multi-modal management approach of musculoskeletal conditions such as: tendinopathy, ligament and joint sprains, muscle strains, plantar fasciitis, ITB syndrome, myofascial restrictions, shin splints, as well as post-surgical and traumatic scars.
